What is a business diagnostic and do you need one?
The term 'business diagnostic' gets used in a lot of different ways by a lot of different consultants. At Amber Rocket, it means something specific: a structured two-week process that maps how your business actually operates, surfaces the friction points, and produces a clear written picture of what's going on and why. It's not a strategy document and it's not a list of recommendations. It's a map.
What happens during the two weeks
The diagnostic starts with a long first conversation, usually two hours, where Amelia Whitfield asks about the business in detail: how work comes in, how it gets done, how decisions get made, where things tend to go wrong, and what the founder thinks the main problem is. That last question is important, because the answer often changes by the end of the process.
Over the following days, there are two or three shorter follow-up conversations focused on specific areas that came up in the first session. Between sessions, Amelia Whitfield maps what she's heard into a process diagram and a set of friction points, which gets refined as the picture becomes clearer.
What you get at the end
The output is a written findings document, usually eight to twelve pages, that describes how the business works, where the friction is, and what's causing it. It's written to be read by the founder, not to impress anyone. Plain language, specific observations, no jargon.
There's also a one-hour debrief call where we go through the findings together and you can push back on anything that doesn't ring true. Sometimes things get revised at that point. The document is the starting point for whatever comes next, not the final word.
When it's worth doing
A diagnostic is most useful when something feels off but you can't name it precisely, when you're about to make a significant decision and you want to understand the current state clearly before you do, or when you've been running on instinct for a while and you want an outside view of what's actually there. It's not the right tool if you already have a clear picture of the problem and you just need help solving it. In that case, a Strategy Sprint is usually more appropriate.
The diagnostic at Amber Rocket starts at £1,200. If you're not sure whether it's the right fit, the initial call is free and we'll tell you honestly.
